EXCLUSIVE: Brandon’s Predictions for Rare at E3 2013

With Microsoft’s E3 media briefing being less than a day away, the anticipation is at its absolute peak. As was reported a couple of weeks ago, the return of a “historic Rare IP” is set to be announced. With that being said, I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on what this IP might most likely be.

“Fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we’re going to show at E3,” Spencer said. “We had a limited amount of time today and a lot of story to tell. But Rare remains an incredibly important part of our development capability. That historic IP that they’ve built I think can play a real important role on Xbox One.”

The nature of this quote seems to suggest that this game will belong to one of Rare’s most successful franchises, likely ruling out cult classics such as Jet Force Gemini and Blast Corps. From both a critical and commercial standpoint, the three Rare properties that immediately come to my mind are Banjo-Kazooie, Killer Instinct, and Perfect Dark. Even then, I am more inclined to exclusively narrow it down to the Twycross-based developer’s answer to Mortal Kombat.

Along with Microsoft’s recent reacquisition of the trademark, it is worth noting that two of the aforementioned franchises did not perform particularly well in their last outings. Despite the generally positive critical reception at the time of its release, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts sold significantly below expectations. A third installment of Perfect Dark, meanwhile, was in development before ultimately being cancelled. Certainly, there exists the possibility of either one of these two series’ being given another chance, but the signs are pointing more towards Killer Instinct, it seems.

What do you think, though? Do you think that a new installment of Rare’s acclaimed fighter will be announced, or do you see them tackling another IP? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments below!
