So a few days ago, I decided to investigate various Rare trademarks to see if I could discover any recent activity with them. I tried Banjo-Kazooie, Battletoads, Perfect Dark, Conker, Wizards & Warriors, Jet Force Gemini… pretty much anything and everything I could think of off the top of my head. Aside from Killer Instinct (which Microsoft themselves announced last year) there appeared to be nothing. But then I searched up Kameo and to my surprise found that there was, in fact, a bit of activity revolving that particular franchise as early as last year!

According to Trademarkia, Kameo was re-registered on February 28, 2006. That makes sense considering the first game had just released a few months prior and a sequel was once in development before being reportedly cancelled. But what is interesting here is that the current trademark status is “Section 8 & 15- Accepted and Acknowledged”, which went into effect on March 19th, 2012. What does that mean? Basically, it means that the trademark has been in use for at least five consecutive years.

So to break it all down, Rare has in some manner or another, likely been doing something with Kameo for the past five years. There could have been an off-and-on development, perhaps they’ve kept it registered and in use because they would like to revisit it in the near future or maybe a full-blown new game is in developement for the Xbox 720? If you utilize the Trademarkia website yourself to investigate Rare’s titles, then you’ll see that there has currently been no activity on anything recently aside from both Killer Instinct and Kameo. And lest you forget, Rare was hiring last year for talented people for an action/adventure game! Kameo certainly falls into that category…

With the Xbox 720 likely releasing this Holiday season, a new entry for Kameo would be perfect for launch. It sold over a million units on the Xbox 360 and I’ve no doubt that it could do the same again for the 720. It’s hypothetical, of course, until there is an official confirmation but given the evidence above, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it become a reality.

Assuming a new Kameo is in development, is that something you would all want to be revived? Or do you believe that Rare’s talents should be focused elsewhere? Share your opinions in the comments below!

  1. Rare Extreme is no longer a website—I found out today!! This means you are like the last Rare fan site (and arguably the best!) Keep it up! Top notch info!

  2. I’m certainly not the only one left, but I appreciate your kind words.

Rare-Extreme had become a rather sad place to visit. There was a time when it was the prime Rare fansite to visit, the best and at the top of their game. I’m not sure exactly what led to its massive decline, but I believe it may have been Wozza just losing interest in running it. Regardless, I’ll always have fond memories of the place and hate to see it go.
