It’s finally happening! After years and years of wanting and impatiently waiting for Rare to make a big return to gaming’s biggest conference, the UK studio will be in attendance at this year’s E3. Rare’s creative director Simon Woodroffe made the revelation on Twitter that “E3 will tell the world what Gregg Mayles’ new project is all about”. And when pressed about it being a potential Kinect title, he bluntly responds with a “no”, a true indication that the studio has finally moved on from hardware they helped to master.

What this new game we’ll be seeing from Gregg is about is anyone’s guess. There have been several not-so-subtle hints at a Battletoads revival with the trademark renewal, Phil Spencer wearing a Battletoads t-shirt, and even a recent cameo in the Xbox One version of Shovel Knight. Banjo-Kazooie is another strong candidate given how much fans have been anticipating a new game and Nuts & Bolts didn’t exactly scratch anyone’s itch in that regard. Gregg was the lead designer on both of those franchises, so it wouldn’t be farfetched to see either of them from him! Of course, it could also be a completely new IP!

No matter what we see at E3 next month, I can’t express how excited I am enough. Whether it’s a return of something familiar or an all-new IP to experience, I look forward to its unveiling at the tradeshow and hopefully getting some hands-on time with it if it’s in playable form. 43 more days to go!
