Nintendo first introduced their Virtual Console service for the Wii back in December of 2006. It was a service in which Nintendo promised to deliver classic games in their original forms for older systems such as the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and more. They have made well on their promise and have released nearly 1,000 classic games since its launch. Among those have been Rare’s SNES Donkey Kong Country trilogy. Another game bearing the Kong name has been in demand as well for quite some time and that is the Nintendo 64 hit Diddy Kong Racing.

Diddy Kong Racing was a very successful title for both Nintendo and Rare and was among the best racing titles available for the Nintendo 64 platform. So it’s no surprise that people would love the opportunity to be able to purchase it again and relive the experience they had with the game. Unfortunately, Diddy Kong Racing is a title that wil never see the light of day on the Virtual Console and it all comes down to licensing issues. The game contains two characters that Nintendo no longer has any rights to that fully belong to Rare and Microsoft, and they are Banjo and Conker. You could argue that they were removed from the DS version of the game and replaced with other characters, but to do that would mean having to tamper with Nintendo 64 version which isn’t what the Virtual Console is all about. Remember, as I said earlier, the VC is their to deliever games in their original incarnation.

I’m with everyone else in wanting the game to be re-released on the service. It’s just an unfortunate situation that prevents it from ever happening though. Donkey Kong 64 however… That one is still highly plausible with nothing holding back its release other than Nintendo simply emulating it for the service. I hope they do.

  1. I think, except Diddy Kong and Kremling, all characters are owned by Rare. TipTup, for example, appeared in both Banjo’s games.

  2. Lame, you, d think nintendo would pickup on the adventerue\racing in there kart games! That’s what made it awesome :(
